Not Even a Hint: Guarding Your Heart Against Lust

There are not many good books that deal with lust from a truly biblical perspective.  So many of the books – even those written by Christians – fall very far short in some majorly important ways.

Many of them share worldly wisdom instead of Scripture.

  • They are filled with psychological jargon which is used to communicate worldly ideas.  Oftentimes the reader is instructed to do the right thing but for the wrong reason.  We need to give biblical advice, and encourage people to obey because the Bible says to obey.
  • The subject of self-esteem is typically found in books dealing with lust.  Many Christian authors actually encourage readers who are struggling with lust to build their self-esteem.  What a shame!  The only reason anyone gives in to lust in the first place is because he loves himself too much!  The world’s thinking has infiltrated even “Christian” books.
  • In many Christian books “masturbation” is said to be “okay” and “normal” and “healthy.”  Many Christian authors tell the reader to “pray about it” to determine if it is right or wrong.  This advice is bogus!  It is sad to think that so many people have begun sinful patterns because of the worldly advice that has come from a “Christian.”  Masturbation is sin.  I will let you read Harris’ book to find out why – biblically.

There are other Christian books on the subject of lust that fall short in another way.  They share biblical wisdom from Scripture, but they aren’t very practical.  A good book on the subject will deal with a right understanding of biblical truth: What is lust?  Where does it come from? etc. But, it will also deal with the proper application of the biblical truth: How does one renew his mind, “put off the old man,” and “put on the new man?”

Harris has helped all of us in a great way.  In this little book (170 “small” pages) he gives us the following gifts:

  • An accurate understanding of the definition of lust and its source.
  • A biblical view of sex.
  • Help in establishing our own “custom-tailored plan” to battle this sin.
  • A biblical view of males and females and how they differ.
  • A plan for renewing our mind.
  • A biblical view of accountability through the local church.
  • A plan for “putting on the new man.”

Everyone needs to read this book.  Even if you don’t struggle with lust in a large way yourself, you should read it to be a help to others.  If you are a “discipler” of others, you need to be equipped to help others to be Christlike in the face of lust.

There are a few other biblical books on the subject, but none are as balanced, clear, and practical as this one.

Read it and reap.
