The book was a great help to me when I first read it in high school. I sometimes struggled to understand God’s role and my role in the pursuit of holiness. I wanted to be holy. I wanted to be growing. I understood from messages at church that I needed to be doing certain things in order to be holy. At other times, from the same preacher, I would hear that I could not be holy just by working really hard because “God has to make you holy.” “The Pursuit of Holiness” helped me to understand what the Scriptures say about how I should work to be holy, but also how I need to put all of my hope in God to change me.
Jerry Bridges is an incredible writer. He will stretch you theologically, but yet he is easy to understand. He is clear. He is personable. He really helps you to apply the truth. Many Christian writers today do not 'stick close to the text.' They theologize and philosophize. When you are done reading their books, you don't understand Scripture any better than you used to. That is certainly not the case with Jerry Bridges. You will know the text better than you used to. You will understand the text, you will understand how to apply the text, you will be pushed to apply the text, and you will receive hope as you apply the text.
This book is a classic. I am reading it now for the 3rd time, and it won't be the last. It would be a great book to use for a bookstudy with a couple other people. Read it and reap!
